Currently reading: Ross Poldark by Winston Graham

(via Pan Macmillan Australia)
So I've decided to tip my toe in the historical fiction end of the pool with the first book in Winston Graham's Poldark series.
Cornwall, 1783 - 1787

Tired from a grim war in America, Ross Poldark returns to his land and his family. But the joyful homecoming he has anticipated turns sour, for his father is dead, his estate is derelict and the girl he loves is engaged to his cousin.

But his sympathy for the destitute miners and farmers of the district leads him to rescue a half-starved urchin girl from a fairground brawl and take her home – an act which alters the whole course of his life...
I'm a little over halfway through the book and it's been an enjoyable read so far. Verity and Demelza are two of my favorite characters so far and even a rascal like Jud Paynter is somewhere on the list.

I've tried in the past to read historical fiction and usually lose interest early on, but Ross Poldark looks to be the one that will break the ice.
